A dental practice is a place in which diss , deformities , injuries and conditions affecting the mouth , jaws , teeth and surrounding structures are examined , evaluated , treated , and monitored . The Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) ensures that certain infection control norms are followed by the dental practices in the US in to prevent the spread of certain infective diseases in the US . On the other hand the FDA (Federation of Drug Administration ) ensures that bio-medical research on human subjects is conducted in an ethical and safe manner

The CDC has laid down certain guidelines to ensure that infective diseases are not transmitted during the dental procedure in the dental office . These guidelines are to be strictly adhered to by all dental practices as infection-control initiatives . All dental facility should ensure that a written set of rules exist for various procedures such as instrumental sterilization and reuse , cleanup of the equipments , and treatment of traumatic cases . These recommendations are to be followed during training in the dental school itself . Besides , based on current developments , the recommendations need to be updated (CDC , 2003

Based on the current issues , the CDC may suggest development of new criteria so that spread of epidemics can be prevented and controlled in an effective manner . The CDC is one of the 8 departments of the Federal Government Agency in public health and belongs to the US Department of Health and Human Services . One of the most important functions of the CDC in recent years is to prevent the spread of HIV /AIDS , and perform surveillance of the disease

The CDC 's recommendations when implemented in the dental environment ensure that the risk of transmission of infections in the dental environment from patients to healthcare professional , vis-versa , and from patient-to-patient is prevented . It has laid down certain recommendations regarding immunization of the health workers , adoption of barrier methods , frequent hand-washing , disinfection of the surfaces thorough sterilization of the instruments , thorough disinfection of the dental laboratory work , maintenance of the water lines connected to the dental units , proper handling of tissue specimens , appropriate waste management system , educational programs and implementation of these guidelines (CDC , 1993 . An advisory committee develops these guidelines which are then suggested to the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services
