Leadership & Decision Making; Participatory and Team Leadership
In various types of teams under many different operating conditions participation from team members has contributed to a variety of benefits towards decision making . A good leader who allows participation from his team in making decisions typically brings higher output and a better quality of output from his team . Here a team leader demonstrates his trust in his members by giving them some power , and receive members creativity and commitment in return . This is so as members would feel their sense of worth and importance . Giving them a part in decision making

tends to improve motivation because team members feel more accepted and involved in the given situation . Their self-esteem satisfaction and cooperation with their team leader also may improve . In this way , team members would feel free to make suggestions for both qualitative and quantitative improvements (Newstrom and Davis 1993 .Although maybe not all the ideas are useful , there are enough valuables ones to produce genuine long-run improvements for the team because of concerted efforts they did in deciding a matter . The results often are reduced conflict and stress both to team leader and team members . They would be more commitment to goals , and better acceptance to change . Team members also reduce turn over and absences , because they feel that they have a better place to perform their roles and that they are more fulfilled in such a team
The results will clearly show that participation has broad systems effects that favorably influence a variety of team outputs . However the benefits may not appear immediately , but the whole system will become humanly effective . The relationship of leader and team members is easier , which is the most crucial in the continuity of the existence of a team
Furthermore (Blair , et al ) mentioned that inevitably , disputes ranging from minor differences in opinion , to fundamental differences in ideology , will arise . The role of the team leader is to handle such disagreements constructively , ensuring that the team remains focused on achieving its goal . The leader must encourage team members to stand back from any disagreements and look at things objectively . By doing this any differences between group members will be resolved and possible conflicts avoided
Finally , the most important point for a team leader to remember is that each individual needs to think that they are working with the best people - to feel proud to be part of the team , and that they are a part of the decision the team makes . By getting people into this state of mind a leader will instill a high level of group morale people will work harder and achieve more
