Labor unions were formed to fight for workers ' rights . In the United States , labor unions are legally acknowledged as legislative representatives for workers in various industries both in public and private sector . Some of the functions of Labor unions in the United States are to carry out a collective bargain of salaries , working conditions and other benefits at workplaces for their members . Unions have also been very important in the political scene (especially in

Democratic Party politics ) but nowadays it 's not so much pronounced as in the past years . This is usually through recruitment of members and alliance with like-minded people . Due to this , the Unions have responded and have used this as a weapon to amend labor legislation

Today , the U .S labor unions are bound to either one of the two larger associations i .e . the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organization ) or the CWF (Change to Win Federation . All these unions advocate for work guiding principles and legislations that are fair to the workers . The AFL-CIO has extended its roots and now it 's concerned with global trade issues . The major benefit that unions have established is that there has been a notable reduction in chaos and strike activities
