She was seventh in her family to be given that name although she is the one who made it famous . Cleopatra was born in 69 BC after her family had ruled Egypt for over 100 years . During her birth , her father Alexander was the king of Egypt Cleopatra acquired leadership skills by looking at the way her father used to govern . She learned different languages because of her desire to be able to speak with the ancient Egyptians together with foreigners After the death of the father in 51 BC , Cleopatra took over from her father after which she shared the first years of her rule with her small brother-husband called , Ptolemy XIII . She and her brother did not rule for long . They ruled for three years after which her brother through the help of their father 's advice took control of the government forcing Cleopatra to flee to Syria in the year 48 BC (Stanley , 2007
