The Old Testament tells about the story of David , the shepherd boy . One day , he met Samuel , the prophet , who anointed David . This was not known to anybody but Samuel . David was also a musician . His first appearance in King Saul 's palace was when he was asked to play the harp for the King

David , once again , caught the attention of King Saul when as a boy armed only with a few stones and a sling shot , David single-handedly defeated the Philistine giant

, Goliath . David earned the King 's admiration as he showed courage in defeating Goliath who could not be defeated by the King 's men . King Saul made David the commander of his troops

While working for King Saul , David earned the friendship of the King 's son , Jonathan . David remained loyal to King Saul and to Jonathan . He grew stronger and he was well liked as well . This made King Saul envious of David 's apparent rise to stardom . King Saul 's jealousy of David 's popularity and courage became so intense that he plotted and attempted to kill David at least three times

Jonathan , remaining the good friend that he was to David , chose to hide David from King Saul and his men . At one time , Jonathan made his father promise not to plot against David 's life anymore . King Saul did not keep his promise hence , David had to once again flee from King Saul 's reach

As David was moving from one place to another in to escape from King Saul and his men , he gained his own followers . This increased King Saul 's fears and he hunted for David

In all these trials that David encountered with King Saul and his jealousies , David remained the loyal servant to the King and the friend to Jonathan . At the time when King Saul and Jonathan were killed in a battle , David mourned for their death

David was destined to be King as was seen by Samuel when he anointed David , the shepherd boy . But the fact of his strength , his victories in battle , and the growing number of his followers did not change the character of David

At the age of 30 , King David was able to unite the kingdoms of Judah and Israel . He ruled over the two kingdoms and united the people . When he felt that Israel was already secured , he established the City of David in Jerusalem . He continued to be the visionary that he was and consulted Samuel in his plan to build a temple for God . Samuel told David that it was not for him to build this temple as he had shed blood in his days as a warrior . This was a task reserved for David 's son , the next King .
