`To Kill A Mockingbird` by Harper Lee

`To Kill A Mockingbird` by Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 . The book got appreciation of both - critics and readers because it sheds light to important social problems and contains interesting psychological and philosophical observations

The novel describes three years from the life of small girl Jean Louise Scout ' Finch , the daughter of Alabama 's widowed lawyer . During this small period Scout meets a lot of challenges , which change her opinion on many subjects and make her think about things

she had had no idea about earlier . Scout and her brother Jem enter the world of adults and start seeing things from another perspective . The novel is written in a form of first-person narration and we know about events from Scout 's point of view . At the same time the narration is not told by a small girl . It is a story rather of grown-up person who recalls events from her childhood . Several conflicts developed through the narration help the author to attract readers ' attention to some burning problems of the society and human relations . There are several external conflicts in this novel . The first major conflict arises between dishonest alcoholic Bob Ewell and a black man Tom Robison . Bob accuses Tom of raping his daughter Mayelle . Tom is not guilty and Bob is aware of this but his hatred to black people makes him insist on his lie . This conflict represents not only withstanding of two men , but also the withstanding of two different ways of life , two different systems of values and conflict between slavering past and future liberalization of the Southern society . The novel is set in the 30s of the last century in the South of America . The author depicts a conflict between two men as a typical racist conflict , which was common at the times described Atticus Finch , Scout 's father becomes involved in the conflict when he appoints to defense Tom Robison in court . Very soon Atticus becomes involved in the conflict with the people from his community . Despite Atticus 's decent reputation people become hostile to him when find out that he is going to defense a black man . He becomes involved in the conflict with the society

The novel explores several important themes , but I believe that the theme of racism and tolerance is the major one . Atticus , the lawyer who defends black man , becomes the carrier of ideas of tolerance and acceptance in this novel . His acceptance is expressed not only towards the person he defends in the court . He also shows compassion and understanding to such characters as Bob Ewell and Mrs . Dubose despite the fact they are abandoned by all the rest members of the society

The book is set up during the period when society is approaching major changes in the attitude to African Americans . The author describes the very moment when two systems confront each other . The first system represents archaic Southern aristocracy . These people...
