_Juvenile Justice A major problem that can be linked to juveniles is the substance (drug abuse that is widespread to many youth . Usage of substance (drugs ) can lead to some problems which include delinquent behaviors , anti-social attitudes and health problems . When someone on a family is on drugs , the entire family , friends and society are affected According to statistics , juvenile delinquency pertaining to drug abuse is reducing but still quite alarming . As of 2005 , the most common drug types that juveniles used are marijuana , illicit drug other than marijuana and non-medical

use of psychotherapeutic drugs . Most of youth in twelfth grade (48 .2 ) had used illicit drugs ones in their lifetime Those who are active in activities like sports , theater , band and the likes are less likely to use illegal drugs than those who are inactive in activities
Usage of illegal drugs affects the entire well-being of a person their health , their relationships , their role in the community . As to the health of drug users , mental health is the most affected . Problems that may occur are depression , developmental lags , apathy , withdrawal and other psychosocial dysfunctions like misbehavior , personality diss suicidal attempts and suicides . In 2006 , there were 2 .1M youth aged 12 to 17 years old who needed treatment , of the treatment
To address juvenile issues , the government is implementing different strategies and techniques . There are several programs that help juvenile delinquents to have a better life . There are drug courts that implements program that helps in reducing drug usage and recidivism , provide treatment , integrate drug treatment with rehabilitation services to promote long-term recovery , and reduce children in welfare system . There are also several programs that cater to youth needs . The Blueprints for Violence Prevention targets to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice of drug dependency . Another example is the Drug-Free Communities Support Program which provides grants to communities in prevention of alcohol , tobacco , illicit drug and inhalant abuse
The juvenile system also has its flaws . They are using excessive incarceration . Incarceration should only be used in situations that there are no appropriate alternative . Children should not be deprived of their liberty . They are not to be imprisoned just because they have painted graffiti , violated curfew , minor fights with schoolmates , or runaway from homes . Instead , they are to be treated if they need it . If they are emotionally or mentally imbalanced , the more they are in need of help first and foremost from the government . They should be given proper treatment and rehabilitation according to their misconduct or according to their condition . One of the problems concerning incarceration is the lack of community-based programs that deal with the accused and convicted youth . Sometimes the judges are left with no option regarding the custody of juvenile youth but to hold those children in custody . Another thing to be addressed is solitary confinement during incarceration .
