The purpose of Ericsson 's essay is to educate people in the many ways that we tend to lie or are lied to every day . In the essay , she attempts to open the reader 's eyes as to the many negative effects as well as the extremes of these common lies

Lastly , the writer uses an element of this introduction (the part about lying to the bank about the check being in the mail ) in the conclusion , to come full circle and sum up all the points neatly into one identifiable , and personal conclusion
