What is the essay 's PURPOSE

The purpose of Ericsson 's essay is to educate people in the many ways that we tend to lie or are lied to every day . In the essay , she attempts to open the reader 's eyes as to the many negative effects as well as the extremes of these common lies

The introduction has more than one effect . First , the writer gives the reader a look into her

own life as a way of relating , finding common ground . She takes away the idea that the essay is just a self-righteous speech against lying because with her story she says "I 'm just like you I lie too " Also , the story gives a starting premise , a back story into what motivated the writer to pen the essay . Lastly , the writer uses an element of this introduction (the part about lying to the bank about the check being in the mail ) in the conclusion , to come full circle and sum up all the points neatly into one identifiable , and personal conclusion
