Stress in Women with Postpartum Depression : a Phenomenological Study This study starts with the fact that postpartum depression occurs worldwide , in most cultures . The incidence of its occurrence worldwide ranges from 10 to 20 . It states that stress after childbirth is the result of the woman having to adapt socially , psychologically and culturally to the new situation . Those women that lived a more stressful life leading up to the pregnancy and birth of their child showed higher levels of depressive symptoms . This is contrasted to cultural differences in which the customs , rituals

, and role of family members plays a role in reducing postpartum stress . The authors of the study then go on to recognize that most postnatal stress studies have adopted quantitative approaches by using either questionnaires or asking informants to list stressful events ' and that there lacks any in-depth information from those living with postpartum depression as to their lived experience with the condition
This study researched the lives of 11 Chinese women living in Hong Kong , 6 months after giving birth . It concentrated on the lived experience ' of postpartum depression among the Chinese women . The researchers found that living in such a large city as Hong Kong , the women were exposed to many unique challenges which , if not properly managed by themselves , loved ones and their doctors , could greatly increase their chances of suffering from the condition . They identified 5 major themes relating to postpartum depression among the group parenting competence , the expectation-experience gap , baby-minder arrangements , childcare demands , and conflict with culture and tradition . The concluded that health care staff should further educated women on the condition and provide postnatal educational classes to help support women who find themselves with the condition
