Ecker and Hulley have taken no steps to correct this flaw or even to acknowledge that they recognize it exists In general , Freud and most psychotherapists from Freud 's time to the present are referring to the subconscious when they say the `unconscious ' Unconscious individuals do not respond to any stimulus whereas the subconscious maintains the body without need for ego to be consciously aware of its actions . That is , the conscious mind (whatever the term mind ' may mean ) need not be involved . Unconscious individuals do not do anything ! They are vegetables . Even if they are aware of their surroundings (and that question is sometimes a matter of debate , they cannot respond to those surroundings . This is not so much a criticism of Ecker and Hulley 's ideas as it is of Freud and how Ecker and Hulley express their ideas with respect to Freudian concepts , but since their approach deals with how therapists approach an aspect of Freudian therapy , the criticism of Freud overlaps the ideas of Ecker and Hulley .
