The heroes are thwarted by a crew of undead pirates lead by Captain Jack Sparrow 's former first mate . The plot is ridden by various betrayals and seeming betrayals among the characters leading to the rescue of Ms . Swann by Will and Jack and the capture of Jack Sparrow by the authorities . However , Sparrow escapes towards the end of the film . In Sweeney Todd , Mr . Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp ) returns to England after being falsely incarcerated for fifteen years when a judge took sexual interest upon his beautiful wife and decided to have him put away so that he could have his way with her Mr . Barker returns as a dark , demented person under the alias , Sweeney Todd who with the help of a woman baker , Mrs . Lovett , sets up a barber shop where he begins murdering customers out of his insanity from losing his wife and daughter . Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean , a young man also asks for Johnny Depp 's character 's help to rescue a love interest who turns out to be Sweeney 's daughter . In contrast , Sweeney does little to help the young man rescue his daughter and instead obsesses with exacting vengeance upon the judge . Also unlike in Pirates of the Caribbean , Johnny Depp 's character does not survive and is murdered shortly after fulfilling his mission of killing the judge
