question , Matthew opened his book with a careful account of the birth of Jesus Christ and the events that accompanied it

The Gospel According to Matthew has been called by many Bible scholars the most important single document of the Christian faith . Historians tell that this book was the most widely read , and the most quoted , in the early church . While all four gospels are important , it is not without reason that Matthew stands first .
