This study is focused on the economic changes of Japan before and after World War Two and seeks to answer the question whether Japan is a rich country . But before one could fully understand the present status of the Japanese economy , it is imperative to know its economic development

Patterns of Development

It was noted that Japan had undergone two periods of development since the Tokugawa government made it accessible for the commerce and influence from the West . The first began in 1868 which was extended until World War Two and the second commenced in 1945 that continued until the mid-1990 's . The Japanese opened themselves in the ideas and influence of the Westerners during both periods . It was also during these periods when changes in the political , social and economic system of the country were revolutionized . The encouragement of the government for economic change via national revolution , planning and advising was driven by the goal of making Japan powerful and wealthy in to avoid the threats on its independence

From the Meiji Period to World War II

During the Meiji period , the education system for the young members of the country was created based on the system used by the Westerners Japanese also created railroads , improved roads and inaugurated land reform programs as a way of preparation for further development of the country . The government of Japan during this period played a big role in stimulating economic growth thus , they became the guide of businesses Factories and shipyards were built and sold to other entrepreneurs that became the foundation of larger conglomerates that still dominate the business world today . The promotion of private enterprises was spearheaded by the Japanese government and this was strengthened by the enactment of pro-business policies such as low corporate taxes

As a way of preventing the foreign states from suppressing Japan in its development , an immense empire was built colonizing Taiwan , Korea Manchuria and areas of northern China .
