These conditions seem tighter and stressful for employees when compared to that of standard employment where payment is standard despite the performance , job security is assured and benefits are lucrative . The question to consider is why do employees prefer the former means of getting employment ? According to Bray and Waring (2009 617 , employee attitudes towards industrial relations are changing from collective power bargains to individualistic bargaining in this modern time . This means that grievances at the workplace are tackled from an individual point of view rather than in a collective manner . No-strike clauses by employers in state schools warrant that any employee participating in strikes or other union movements against the employer 's interests is terminated from the workplace as an individual . HRM practices , such as performance appraisals , which are individual-based trigger the employees to contribute to the workforce with set individual goals and they do not seem to understand how participation in unions should help them meet their individual targets .
