Japan is a country with very little land resources . Agriculture is not possible on most of the

land . Whatever little is produced is not enough for the ever growing population of Japan . Hence

Japan is heavily dependent on import of agricultural products to feed its population . Rice and

food products made from rice are very much liked by the Japanese people On the other hand

India produces the most nourishing and tasty variety of rice on this world , known as Basmati . It

is perceived that establishing a company

whose main activity is to export rice from India and

import the same in Japan , will be a very profitable business venture This essay tries to analyze a

few aspects of such a business venture

To begin with , it is proposed to establish a company , on a small scale , to purchase rice from

the Indian market and export the same to Japan , from India . On the other hand , the same

company will have an office in Japan , which imports rice from India and distributes the same in

Japan . Once the business attains some stability , opening an office in USA and expanding the

exports to other needy countries can be a part of the futuristic expansion plan . Initially the two

offices in India and Japan will work in close co-ordination . The basic duties of the Indian office

will be purchase of quality rice at a correct price , and exporting it from India . The basic duties of

Japanese office will be to receive the stock dispatched from India , and sell it in the Japanese

market

A brief study of the recent happenings in the rice markets of each of these countries , is a

must , before finalizing the investment plans on such a venture . It is interesting to note that rice

has an important place in the Japanese culture . The emperor also worshipped rice and harvest

festivals were traditionally celebrated in Japan . Every farmer in Japan grows Rice but that is not

enough for the population . Hence , rice is imported from the international market , mainly from

Thailand ( Kakuchi Suvendrini ) India is one of the three biggest exporters of rice , along with

Thailand and USA , but Japan does not figure in the list of major importers of rice from India ( problems and prospects of rice exports from India . The reasons for such an alarming trade

situation must be analyzed before starting such a venture

If the results of the analysis give positive signals , then the Indian arm of the new company

needs to begin its function with locating an office suitable from logistics and government co-

ordination point of view . This office should be located in a port city Perhaps , Chennai , a huge

metropolitan city of South India , is ideal , because South India grows maximum of rice . The

officials , if recruited from the USA , need to study the culture of India the way business is done in

India , which has the image of a heavily corrupt country with tough political and executive

bureaucracy ( Venkatraman N...
