Iran is a country which covers 636 ,300 square miles . Pakistan Azerbaijan

Armenia , Turkmenistan , Afghanistan , Caspian Sea , Persian Gulf , Gulf of Oman , Turkey

and Iraq is its neighbors . The capital city of Iran is Tehran . Iran is a major power in the

Middle East with huge reserves of petroleum and gas . It has also made considerable

strides in augmenting its industrial and military power

Iran is a theocracy which is ruled

by religious fundamentalists . The 1978 Islamic

revolution led to the overthrow of the pro western regime of the Shah The revolution was

a reaction to the corrupt influence of western values which were considered a threat to the

Iranian Muslims

Iran is an ancient civilization with a diversified and rich history . It has enjoyed

periods of prosperity and stability followed by decades of stagnation and decline . Foreign

interference and encroachment in the 19th century led to the decline of Iran . Britain and

Russia divided Iran into their respective spheres of influence in 1907 In 1919 Britain

induced the Iranian prime minister to sign a treaty giving Britain substantial political

economic , and military control over Iran . Reza Khan in 1921 used the Cossack

Brigade to overthrow the Iranian government and establish his own dynasty . His

failure to expel German civilians from Iran prompted a joint Anglo-Russian invasion

which led to the overthrow of his government

Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi became the ruler of Iran in 1942 . His rule was

characterized by increased literacy rate , reduction of epidemics emancipation of women

and the development of a modern economy . However the Shah became increasingly

repressive and autocratic . His economic policies created a middle class but also led to the

proliferation of slums

The 1978 Islamic revolution eventually led to the overthrow of the Pahlavi

regime . The regime pursued a hostile policy towards the United States Iranian students

seized control of the American embassy . Iran also began sponsoring radical groups in the

Arab world to destabilize regimes which it considered illegitimate . The Iran-Iraq war

further led to the isolation of the Iranian regime

Iran is ruled by a fundamentalist clergy that is opposed to the United States . It

represents a global threat due to its formidable armed forces , missile arsenal , support for

terrorist groups and its pursuit of nuclear weapons

Iran has a formidable army by regional standards . According to

globalsecurity .org , Iran has some 350 ,000 men at arms . Further Iran also has three

mechanized divisions , each with three brigades , each of which in turn was composed of

three armored and six mechanized battalions seven infantry divisions one airborne

brigade one Special Forces division composed of four brigades one Air Support

Command and some independent armored brigades including infantry and a "coastal

force " There was also in reserve the Qods battalion , composed of ex-servicemen
