Lori Gottlieb (2005 ) describes herself as an independent professional woman whose biological clock is loudly ticking while she is unable to find a suitable mate to serve as father . A Yale graduate , she is not without the cognitive skills to weigh the merits and risks of marrying a father figure who may or may not prove to be a good husband for her . She is clear about the modern woman 's dilemma

when she writes , Before women achieved financial independence , they often had to choose between love or (sic ) money . In the new millennium my choice seemed to be between love and offspring ' Gottlieb makes the point single women can choose to be single mothers without stigma and with the support of other single mothers

Gottlieb makes some excellent points in support of the relationship between sperm donorship and single mother status . According to Gottlieb (2005 , women who are willing and wanting to parent are able to do so in absence of a suitable mate . This ability to choose motherhood without marriage means a woman does not have to delay or forego building a family if unable to find a mate who is both exemplary partner and father . Relieved of the burden of finding a mate before her biological clock chimes , a woman can make a decision to parent based on genetics alone . In this decision to become a single mother , women are supported by Single Mothers by Choice described by Gottlieb (2005 ) as a national group for women who want to have children but won 't shack up with the wrong guy to do so ' Single Mothers by Choice supports women in all phases of their decision . According to Gottlieb (2005 ) the media has supported this new trend in the form of television programs based on the theme of single motherhood and by celebrities announcing intent to become single mothers by choice

Becoming a single mother by personal choice is not without concerns . As Gottlieb (2005 ) indicates , costs of artificial insemination are high and chances of a pregnancy occurring are low . With fresh sperm , a 30 chance of pregnancy is the norm with frozen sperm the chance of pregnancy drops to 10 . This low rate of successful pregnancy is not without a high dollar price tag . Successful pregnancy does not always occur on the first attempt , and by the third attempt the cost can be nearly 20 ,000 Societal concerns exist as well . According to Gottlieb (2005 , most sperm donors are restricted to 25 births per person to reduce the risk of a disproportionate number of offspring living in the same community perhaps unknowingly marrying a half-sibling later in life .
