Introduction

The business environment is on a constant change and this requires a constant reviewing of certain terms . Having a performance appraisal or evaluation on regular basis is a good idea . This entails having written records of employees ' performance , setting clear goals to get more productivity from workers and having an objective means of determining compensation . As peter Drucker (2007

) observes , outstanding performers are motivated strong performance . Therefore , supervisors must make it a precedence to understand each employee 's strengths and motivation and provide fair , objective and consistent appreciation to keep the employee fully engaged (Toolpack Consulting , Teaneck . The managers should not choose to deliberate on over an employee 's shortcomings but rather target their efforts to enhance each employee 's strengths

However , carrying out the above might not be as smooth as such there could lead to a number of challenges to be addressed . What is the best way to do it ? What kind of work deserves appraisal ? These are just but a few of the challenges . This calls for clear observations and understanding of the process of performance appraisal and employee evaluation . This understanding and constant evaluation help reduce the colossal task to manageable levels . One big challenging issue arises when the manager is dealing with highly technical people or employees To such , performing appraisal becomes more difficult (Dexter A . Hansen 2005

Discussion

Growth and expansion of a company poses a challenge both to the manager and the employee . The manager at this stage deals with a greater number of employees and perceiving them alike may lead to conflict as there is always diversity in perception and approach of every employee given a particular situation . In his bid to evaluate the employees , the manager might be tempted to generalize the employees placing them on one platform forgetting this fact

This problem can be handled in a number of ways

Carrying out evaluations not for promotions , bonuses or raises but for development , growth and communication on a continuous basis

Carrying out self-reviews based on the idea that workers are most familiar with their work , and it is essential for them to be involved This is because employees gauge themselves and suggest improvements thereby helping to clarify their goals more clearly and expose any area of weakness

Another problem that might come in is the fact that teamwork may be damaged . To solve this problem , peer reviews might be of substantial importance . The peer review program may be designed to set the objectives , benefits and goals of the pilot program where people are given confidence to provide response on the system itself . This will let the employees resolve any differences without allowing the system lose credibility among the employees . The manager may find it vital to take the role of a counsellor , rather than judge (Drucker , Peter 2007
