Paper Topic:

Intervention and Contemplation

At the contemplation stage , clients are especially susceptible to consciousness-raising intervention . While films often have greater and more immediate appeal , I would recommend The Shawshank Redemption as a tool of motivation and education of clients in this stage

Since clients are undergoing the process of change , in the majority of cases it means that they are deeply dissatisfied with themselves or their circumstances . The example of the protagonist , Andy Dufresne , is inspiring for anyone facing difficulties in life . The main message of the film is that no one should ever give up

hope and that people can and should stay true to themselves in any situation

At the first glance , the film might seem irrelevant for intervention purposes , since it is mostly about the protagonist being a static rather then dynamic character . However , Andy Dufresne develops new skills and attitudes in the Shawshank prison : his will becomes stronger , his coping abilities are being enhanced , and his personality matures . At the same time , the protagonist is unwilling to blend with his environment he hopes for the better despite all the horrors of prison life

Andy Dufresne is a very goal-oriented character . Desirous of running away from the prison , he employed all his wit and spent all his time for pursuing his aim . This a very motivating example , since clients at contemplation stage should get ready for the following stages of preparation and action

Furthermore , clients would unconsciously compare their situation to that of Andy Dufresne , ad their problems might seem insignificant as compared to he tragic situation of the protagonist
