Interpersonal communication is an integral part of human life and behavior . The purpose of this is to study the impact that self-concept , perception and emotion have on our communication with others . In to assist with the understanding of this subject we have studied a variety of research material . In our opinion the evidence this has produced , together with our own perceptions , proves that consciously or not , the way we see ourselves , the way we see others and our emotional make-up

is an intrinsic part of our communication skills

Introduction

Self-concept , perception and emotion are intrinsic to our interpersonal communications . The purpose of this is to review a sample of the research available , which is relevant to the subject being discussed Our intention , as a result of our review of this research , together with our interpretation , will be to consider whether the hypothesis outlined above is proven . To this end we open this with our understanding and those of others , in respect of the various terms which make-up the hypothesis . Following on from this we then reflect upon the impact that each of the elements described within the hypothesis , upon the way we communicate with others . In conclusion we will attempt to bring all of these aspects together to support our hypothesis

Interpersonal Communication according to Wikipedia (2006 ) refers to HYPERLINK "http /en .wikipedia .org /wiki /Communication " \o "Communication " communication with another person ' Despite popular misconceptions communication does not only refer to speech . It covers a range of other skills . These include non-verbal and unconscious communication , together with the art of listening and questioning . We all use interpersonal communication for a number of purposes . From a personal , or internal , point of view it is necessary to enable us to develop as a person by the acquisition of knowledge and information and to assist us in the creation of meaningful relationships . In the work environment , whilst we use communication for the same purposes as we do personally , we also extend these skills in an effort to influence or be influenced by others , thereby endeavoring to advance our position in the workplace

However , what this simple explanation does not address is why the interpersonal communication skills of some people are better than others . To understand this we need to look at how an individual develops these skills in the first place and what aspects of their own personality affects their skills in this area . In our opinion there are three core aspects of our personality which are form the core of our interpersonal skills

Self-Concept

Our own concept of the way we see our own self has perhaps the greatest impact on the way we communicate with others . Others often impose self-concept upon us . If a parent tells you that you are useless often enough then that is the conception that you may have of yourself and visa-versa...
