Instr. Presentation Task 4
Much of the learning that takes place in the classroom happens because students feel free and safe to answer the questions that the teacher asks . When students feel criticized or demeaned by the teacher , they are much less likely to answer anything , which means they may not demonstrate their learning . Learning to make corrections is essential to good teaching There are many ways to address making corrections or eliciting feedback . Since one standard of good pedagogy is teacher and student working together , the teacher could ask questions of the student to help

br clarify the question and lead them toward the answer . This would be a dialogue between teacher and student . Many things in the classroom can be done as a dialogue between teacher and student to make students feel involved . Whole group correction may mean backing up to reteach a concept , the fore making sure that students develop that skill . It may simply mean moving back for a bit rather than moving forward Connecting to students ' lives is always a good idea . So the teacher could reteach the material with a connects to the lives of the students . The teacher could make the lesson more challenging and interesting , thereby engaging more students Group work could also be used to help correct students in content Technology would be another tool
Demeaning students is obviously never a good idea because it makes the shut down ' There are so many approaches to providing feedback for them that do not involve demeaning them . If a student is misbehaving simply walk over quietly and ask him /her to see you after class . This lets the student know that you mean business , and it helps them feel that the teacher has not reprimanded them in front of the class . For eliciting feedback about academics from students , the possibilities are endless . Peter Elbow talks about something called Writing to Learn This is a great way for students to write about a prompt that involves content knowledge . The teacher can assess where each student is , and it is done is to use self assessment . Students can be reflective about their own learning and let the teacher know where they think they stand . Teachers can use this information to change their pedagogy . Yet another tool would be exit cards , where students can write what they learned or ask questions or make comments on the way out the door by writing on a note card . The teacher can then review this feedback and plan the next lesson accordingly . There is even a technological product out there called clickers . For classrooms with computers or laptops , the teacher asks a question and everyone uses their clicker to answer . This provides immediate feedback to both teacher and student
As stated , feedback is incredibly important in the classroom . The manner in which a teacher teaches means everything to the student Teachers must make their classrooms safe ' and find ways to give and get feedback without demeaning students
