Project management is the application of knowledge , skills , tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements , as described by Schwalbe (2005 pg 9 . As projects increase in complexity scope and size , with people in every industry and every country managing projects of all sorts , project management has become more important and significant than ever . According to a

report in 2001 by the Project Management Institute , the US spends 2 .3 trillion on projects every year , whereas the world as a whole spends nearly 10 trillion of its 40 .7 trillion gross product on projects of all kind . Furthermore , more than 16 million people regard project management as their profession

The most important consideration of project management is to complete the project - on time , within budget , and according to specifications Frame (2003 , pg 6 ) identifies these as the triple constraints of project management that constitute the focal point of the project professional 's attention and energy . Therefore , project management , within this context , can be viewed as carrying out a project as effectively as possible in respect to the constraints of time , money and specifications

Project Management Process

In project management , there are 9 defined knowledge areas that describe the key competencies that project managers should be proficient in These 9 knowledge areas also define the project management processes as below

Project Integration Management - the coordinating of all the other project management knowledge areas

Project Scope Management - Defining and managing all the work required to complete the project successfully

Project Time Management - Estimating how long it will take to complete the work , developing a realistic work schedule that is acceptable within specifications , and facilitating the completion of the project on time

Project Cost Management - Preparing and managing the budget for the project

Project Quality Management - Ensuring that the project will satisfy the stated or implied needs for which it was undertaken

Project Human Resource Management - Managing the effective use of people involved with the project

Project Risk Management - Includes identifying , analyzing and responding to risks related to the project

Project Procurement Management - Involves acquiring or procuring goods and services for a project from outside the performing organization
