Discount retailing in the United States began in the 1950 's . The industry was not as enhanced as it currently is during that time Operators at that time sold general merchandise in stores that were sparsely furnished and staffed . The emergence of discount stores which offered lower prices on goods was a challenge to the traditional department stores . The starting of the three largest players in this industry (Wal-Mart , Target and K-Mart

) in 1962 saw the beginning of growth of the retail marketing industry in the United States . The year the three started , the industry generated over 4 .25 billion in terms of sales . The industry grew steadily in sales generating 28 billion by the end of the 1960s , a figure that surpassed department stores by at least 8 billion . A part from the 1970s economic difficulties that saw most business organizations including those in the retail marketing go bankrupt , the industry has experienced massive growth both in sales and profit margins . Introduction of supercentres that combine both grocery and merchandise has contributed to the growth of the industry due to increase in sales . This industry has is characterized by a lot of competition that requires the operators to come up with strategies that will enable them increase their share of the market and keep a competitive advantage over their rivals .
