In LA Confidential all morality has gone to the wall. Cops and crooks are as bad as each other. Discuss Ellroys novel in the light of this comment.

As confessed in his memoir My dark places ' James Ellroy did indulge in petty crimes like shop lifting , house breaking and burglary and did serve some time in jail . In spite of his inclination to be on the other side of the law he has remained a self confessed and overt admirer of LAPD which forms the basis of his morality which is not constrained by empty ideas . Ellroy has seen the underbelly of the crime and had been a victim of one such crime early on in his life (his mother 's murder

. The range of experiences he has gone through in his life accords him the imagination to view issues beyond and beneath the obvious moral framework . In the third book of the L .A Quartet L .A .Confidential Ellroy continues to recreate his world - a world where there is little scope for individuals to buck a trend or overturn dominant hierarchies His works appeal to a wide audience for two reasons . First being , the overwhelming cynicism that pervades the novels , that seems to proclaim the end of the black and white nature of morality and turns the whole world different hues of gray . The second reason is the confounding ease with which Ellroy proclaims both right wing and left wing ideas seamlessly

Of the four primary cop characters of the novel , Ed Exley is the one with the most objective and idealistic morality and can be taken as the back drop against which most of the other...
