take the drug , difficulties in controlling its use , unable to stop use in spite of knowing the harmful consequences , inability to give time and attention to other activities increased tolerance , and withdrawal symptoms . People indulge in substance abuse for various reasons . These substances such as drugs , alcohol and tobacco provide some intoxication and hinder people 's attention , control judgment and control . Persons addicted to the abused substance find it extremely difficult to come out of it Substance abuse brings abut tolerance where larger amounts of the substance needs to be used to experience the same level of pleasure and intoxication . When addicts try to quit , it brings about withdrawal symptoms . It is caused by reducing or stopping the intake of the abused substance .
