The United States of America , from its humble beginnings , has reached a level of economic and political affluence through one essential tenet- ostensibly , the ability of anyone , regardless of their origins or present station in life , to achieve what has come to be known as the American Dream , which is to say the culmination of material possessions , monetary wealth , and societal acceptance . One would commonly refer to these individuals as rich . Conversely , there are those for whom , for whatever reason , these milestones have eluded them

The void between rich and poor in American society is the focus of a pivotal book on the subject , The Rich Get Richer , The Poor Get Prison by Jeffrey Reiman . Now in its 8th printing , this book has become a vital reference to attempt to explain the association between poverty , crime and the strange phenomenon that increases wealth for some and poverty and imprisonment for others

This research will be comprised of several sections- a summary of Reiman 's work , an analysis of the work , and in conclusion , the presentation of the essential findings from the previous sections of the research . Overall , this research will not only examine a highly credible work in the field of criminology , but also to comment on a disturbing trend in an increasingly complicated nation
