Definition of a family

According to Schwartz and Scott (2007 ) a family is a group of individuals who are affiliated or related through consanguinity , an affinity or through mere co-residence . According to my understanding of what I can refer to as my family , I would define it as constituting of those who we are closely related by blood . This would be composed of my father , mother and grandparents . Therefore my understanding of my family would

be a social group consisting of my two parents , grand parents and I . Because my family is big , my mother has chosen to remain behind to take care of my grandparents and therefore they are a part of our family

My definition of a family would take a family of orientation . This definition would take in the experience that I have had in the family and the way my parent have played their duty to bring me up and to promote growth and development for all the family members . The understanding of a family as a family of orientation forms a basic understanding for all children who see the family as a place to achieve growth and development though enculturalization and socialization (Parkin , 1997

In view of the above understanding of my family , I look at the role that my parents play in my growth and development . My parents have created an atmosphere for me to achieve maximum growth and development by providing guidance and counseling and support in all my endeavors . For example when I decided to change my religion , my parents have been supportive of my decision and they counseled me to follow whit I want in my life

Therefore my understanding of my family includes my father and my mother and the role they have played in my growth and development . I understand my family as the most influencing social group in my life where I have been enculturalized and socialized

Function of a family

There are many functions that a family plays . However there are some functions that I think my family has ultimately played which have shaped growth and development . The following are the main functions of my family

The first important function of my family is reproduction and socialization of children . I have grown as the only child in my family owing to the one-child role policy implemented in my country China However I feel that my family has played a key role bringing me to this world . While I have felt lonely in my life as I have no brother or sister to share or play with , I feel that my family has been supporting in my growth and development . My parents have taken the role of socializing me and passing to me important social factors that I would have otherwise learnt from my friends .
