Identify a truth that you think that the disaster response profession has taken for granted.
ONE THING THAT DISASTER RESPONSE HAS TAKEN FOR GRANTED There has been so much of training in disaster response as a profession Though , there has been a lot been put to the issue of an effective disaster response . These are nice ideas , talking about preparedness where professionals are trained to get prepared incase disaster strikes Making sure of the communications so as to act . There is also response training and how officers should respond in case there is an emergency disaster strike . I guess that it is with the aim of saving more

lives in case of disaster . Yes , I know and agree that with an effective response in time to disaster would save a lot of lives there is no doubt about that . I was also made to understand that in a case of disaster a good recovery system is an advantage to an effective disaster response . In other words , restoring it to its former glory . This I know is the busiest and hardest of all areas of disaster response . Bringing a destroyed place back to its original state . But there is one issue which I would like to point out is why we should have to go through all these stress when we can prevent it . This is one area which I would like to talk about
There is always this saying that goes that Prevention is better than cure . I would want to believe that this saying works in all areas of life . Yes . One problem that goes with emergency response profession is the issue of mitigation . Going by popular definition , mitigation can be said to be the attempt to prevent hazard before the turn into a disaster . Why should we go one preparing for disaster when we can prevent some of it ? This can be best used in the areas that have to do with technology itself . Let us use the issues of structural buildings and aircrafts as examples . I would say this from my engineering aspect of view
First , I would like to start with structures . There are building which we all know that are outdated and based on its structural compositions and erections , there are overdue , but there are left as structural monument . Why not bring them down according to governmental rules and policies on structures and land use . These buildings are long overdue and if not brought down would collapse someday and would end up taking lives and properties . But if measures like this are take to prevent disaster then it would go a long way to help and save lives and properties
Secondly , we would like to look into the issue of crashes in aircraft in various part of the world . My own friend died in a plane crash and I would never want it to happen again to anyone . There are measures been taken in airports to make sure that the disasters that may occur due to plane crash is being reduce to the maximum when there are no good analytic measures to make sure that every plane that flies is air worthy . If we cannot check the planes to know the ones that are outdated and allow them to be rested , then it is unfortunate that they would be continuous cases of plane crash
In conclusion , I would want disaster response professionals to put more effort in preventing disaster than putting more effort to working on already made disaster
