The Return After a Long Absence : Dissonance in Aeschylus ' Agamemnon

The scene that I chose is the Herald 's arrival in the House of Atreus where Clytemnestra and the people of Argos are waiting for the last ten years . Upon his arrival , he recounted to them his sorrows and his longings while he was in the war , his gratefulness that he has survived and his felicity to have come back in Argos and see his countrymen Moreover , he gladly announced the imminent arrival of King Agamemnon

and ed the people to prepare for him a welcome that he deserved

On the part of the herald was a feeling of relief after being emancipated from the threats and the dangers of the war to his life . The transition is from the herald 's life of danger in Ilium to a life of comfort and belongingness in Argos . He is no longer worried of his every day survival for he has already set foot in a place where his friends and his family dwell

The arrival of the herald marked a wave of change to the citizens of Argos . The chorus admitted that Argos will never be the same again now that the Greek army has already returned . The chorus mentioned that the feeling of homesickness the herald felt when he was away from home is the same feeling that the citizens felt when the Greek army is away Clytemnestra , on one hand , mentioned that she was very delighted to hear the news from the herald . She also acknowledged the fact that Argos will never be the same now that Agamemnon has arrived . She remembered the days when she and the other ladies would just cry their heart out due to their feelings of loneliness and fear on the consequences of the war However , the day of the return of the herald is the day where those sorrows should be buried in oblivion and will soon be replaced with bliss and celebration among the people of Argos
