Humanism and Protestant Reformation were classified as intellectual movements that tend to uplift the image of the Bible as the sole authority in divination , excluding those who act as guardians of holiness in the world . They gave answers to the question of where religion was leading during the Renaissance period . The humanists came into view first and the reformists were offshoots of the teachings of the former

Both of the movements shared something in common . One of these was that they extremely dislike monasticism or

the practice of self-denial and austerity common to people in deep connection to their beliefs . They were also saddened by the fact that the adoration of saints has become a mere tradition rather than spiritual indulgence

They both did not trust the intellectual capability of the clergy , or those who were considered as authorities in teaching and preaching religion to the people . They were also negative with the theological teachings of medieval universities . They felt that the courses being taught had become non-substantial in their contents , providing poor and non-conducive venue for debates and healthy debates . This has led to deserted spiritual excellence plagued with untrue teachings

They both criticized the issues of corruption flooding the hierarchy of the Church , even including the line of the Pope . They were sympathetic to the monarchs and other wealthy people , who were repugnant with the idea of paying and collecting taxes from their own people and sending it to Rome , where the Pope is

The Protestant Reformers were started because some of its founders thought differently with the way spiritual contentment or sanctity could be achieved . The humanists stressed that attainment was through a closer inspection of Biblical contents and belief in oral teachings popularized by the likes of Thomas Aquinas . Reformers did not buy this . They instead held on to the principle of believing only what is on the Bible

There was also difference between the two in terms of their thinking about the nature of humanity . The humanists believed that education , a good one , could make a man of high morality and nobility . In this way an educated man could be considered safe from the wrath of sin . This was in contrast with the reformers who thought that humans could only be saved from the sink of sins by God alone

Moreover , the humanists thought that thoroughly studying religious texts through education could establish a common religion for the world . This was against the principle of the reformers they called Scriptura sola which emphasized the significance of basing faith and all aspects of religion on the Bible alone

Though the Humanists and Protestant reformers shared some similarities and differences , they were both working and especially loud with the re-inspection and better comprehension of the Bible based on careful investigation of its text , and not just through theological interpretations made by earlier people , who turned these into traditions .
