M10 Appraisal Explain the roles of primary and secondary appraisal coping . Cite your references using real-life examples The transactional model of stress and coping states that stressful events are person-environment transactions , therefore how a person evaluates the environment will determine the person 's behavior towards the stressors (Glanz , Rimer Lewis , 2002 . Appraisal coping is the process wherein the individual assess the nature of the stressor Primary appraisal occurs when the individual assesses the importance and the influence of the stressor or the event and secondary appraisal is manifested when

the individual evaluates the degree of controllability of the event and how adequate the individual 's resources are to cope with the stress (Glanz , Rimer Lewis , 2002 . Primary appraisal is initiated when the individual gains an awareness of his /her environment and how factors found in that event or situation can adversely affect the individual . Primary appraisal helps the individual prepare and decide whether the event is a stressor or not . Secondary appraisal happens only if the individual recognizes the event as a stressor during the primary appraisal , in this stage , the individual evaluates whether the stressor or the vent is within his /her personal space and whether he /she can control the event . If the individual decides that it is beyond his /her control then it ceases to be a stressor . On the other hand , if the individual thinks that the stressor is within his /her control then the next step is to assess whether the individual is equipped to cope with the stressor
Stress is a fact of life and it affects as in a daily basis , an example of how primary and secondary appraisal operates in real-life situations is when I had to travel to another city to attend my friend 's wedding . I was part of the wedding entourage but since I had some exams to finish I was not able to attend the preliminary activities . I was waiting in the airport to board when it was announced that my flight was cancelled . I was already feeling guilty at not being able to attend the preliminary activities and now it seemed that I was not about to attend the wedding I was starting to get stressed and then I realized that maybe I could still find a way . Primary appraisal was already occurring I was judging the situation as whether it was stressful or not . Since I found it stressful , I proceeded to secondary appraisal , judging whether I had control over the event and whether I could cope with it effectively . I later learned that the flight was cancelled because of a technical problem I then booked myself on another flight and arrived in time for the wedding
