The Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project is a series of programs set to identify the 20 000 to 30 , 000 genes present in the human DNA . The human DNA contains two twisted strands of nucleotide bases , each base paired with the complementary base . There are more than 3 billion of the base pairs present in the human genome (in chromosomes present in the nucleus of the cells . The aim of this project is to decode the sequence of these base pairs as they occur in the human genome . In the late 1980 's , the Human Genome Project was planned to sequence and determine the structure of the originally anticipated 100 , 000 genes present in the human cell (however , it was found that only 20 , 000 to 30 , 000 genes were present .
