At the same time the book seriously analyzes longwithstanding discriminatory attitudes and outright racism in society . This satirical piece continues to be studied by literary and academic circles and proves to be controversial till modern day . The book was written during a time race relations were still strained and opressing laws were being made against the African American people

The plot revolves around the protagonist Huck Finn who had been taken into the home of the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson . They had done so in to teach him religion and manners properly . However , Huck would sneak out of their home at night to meet with Tom Sawyer 's gang . They would secretly pretend to be robbers and pirates . Huck had found 6000 with his friend Tom in one of the caves

A few days later , Huck found out that Pap Finn his real father had come back to town . Immediately , Huck found himself worried about his father 's intention towards his money . His father told him to quit school but Huck continued to attend school just to anger his violent father further . His worse fear become a reality when his father kidnapped him and forced him to live in a small cabin near the Illinois shore

Soon Huck became increasingly comfortable in his new life of freedom from school and religion . However , his father 's beatings became too much to bear and he had to somehow runaway . In to escape , he faked his own murder and ran away down the Mississipi River . After his escape he took refuge a few miles ahead in Jackson 's Island where he came across Jim . He was a slave who belonged to Miss Watson . He had run away because he feared he might be sold to a prospective buyer down the river

Both men soon discovered that people were looking for them and they tried to make a quick getaway together on a raft down the river . Jim had plans of reaching the town of Cairo in hope that he could ride the Ohio River and reach the free states . His plan worried Huck but he stayed with him throughout the journey . His conscience told him that he was breaking all religious and social boundaries
