The cold war took place in1945-1991 where nations that had joined together in the Second World War became rivals . The two superpowers that is the Soviet Union and the United States engaged in the production of nuclear weapons but never actually used them against each other . These countries never engaged directly in war but used words to threaten each other . The two countries sponsored wars in different parts of the world where their allies

engaged in fighting . The Soviet Union led a communist government while the United States led a democratic government . The United Nations was formed in 1945 with a view of preventing war and conflicts between nations

The cold war affected operations at the United Nations which provides a platform where nations address their issues . The Security Council was established in a bid to maintain peace in the world . With these two warring super powers , the Security Council could not in anyway arrive to a decision that would see the two nations resume normal relations . The two nations held immense power in the United Nations and therefore decision making by the council was difficult . The United Nations could not take military action against the two nations led the strongest armies in the world . The main role of the United Nations is to ensure peace prevails in the world .
