The Role of the Last Chapters

The last part of Richard Preston 's The Hot zone comprised of two chapters : Chapter 1- Highway and Chapter 2- Camp . This last part of the non-fiction novel marked the conclusion of the story . In Chapter 1- Highway , Preston narrated his travel back to Africa to examine the possible place of origin of the Marburg virus and other viruses . While traveling along the Kinshasa Highway , Preston realized that since the built of the said road , AIDS has reached the

cities along it . He then thought that while people find ways to travel faster , viruses find their ways too to spread faster . He , together with his team , was heading to Mt . Elgom and Kitum Cave located in Kenya

In Chapter 2- Camp , however , Preston delved into the mystery of Kitum Cave . Here , he actually faced threats in his life as he saw the possibilities of being attacked by the Marburg and other viruses through the components of the environment . Inside the cave , he was accompanied by his guide Robin McDonald and an armed guard who was deeply needed since there was a trouble in the said place during that time . Before entering the cave , Preston actually left a list of instructions if ever he had been infected by the viruses

If I would be given the chance to write the story , I would also do the same things that Preston has done in his novel . I would , particularly include the last part . It is because I think the story will be lacking and incomplete without the last two chapters . I honestly think that among the two , the chapter about the Kitum Cave is more relevant . It is not only because of the significance of the place in relation to the story but also due to its relevance in Preston 's life

It is clear that the story has already established the importance of the Kitum cave even before the start . In the first part of the story Kitum cave was already mentioned . It was actually the initial setting of the novel where Charles Mornet , one of the important characters , had first encountered the Marburg virus . In this cave , Monet , not knowing that the place was too dangerous for him , got infected by Ebola virus He died in pain after a short while . Seven years after his death , a boy also died after visiting the Kitum Cave

The relevance of the Kitum Cave , as I see it , is that it set the over-all aura of the novel . Being a dark and gloomy place , Kitum Cave 's atmosphere has established perfectly the feeling the readers could expect while reading the first half of the story . Preston has managed to beautifully weave through his words the mystery and fright that Kitum Cave possessed . He was successful in sending terror to the readers through the use of Kitum cave , the place of origin of the fatal viruses Without Kitum Cave , there would be no story...
