I think that the failure of the Prohibition was mainly rooted on its stringent provisions that banned the manufacturing , transportation , sale and consumption of alcohol . These were the very reasons why the temperance campaign did not prevail . Before drafting this amendment many did not see the effects it will bring in the society . The society particularly the moralists were focused only on one result which is the cessation in alcohol consumption . They did not consider that upon the realization of the amendment many people will lose their job , their income and even

their past time . Because of this , there was an upsurge in crime rate , and there was an explosion of bootleggers and speakeasies that eventually led to the birth of the organized crime . Some people were simply subjected to other means which were considered as illegal and immoral in to provide for their family . Also , because of the use of too much power by the law enforcement and the lack of information drive , the prohibition did not succeed . There is a saying that anything done in excess is harmful . This was evident in the employment of excessive power of J . Edgar Hoover to combat the criminals . This have triggered the continuous resistance of the lawless elements to succumb to hands of the law . More so , the lack of information drive on the negative effects of alcohol consumption was evident leaving the people to be ignorant about this matter . Also , restriction results to curiosity . Apparently , people would still try things that are prohibited or restricted in to satisfy their curiosity of why that thing is being prohibited or restricted . Furthermore , alcohol carries a certain social stigma . Anyone who drinks specially if he /she is legally not allowed to drink is considered cool and a rebel which will give that person a positive public perception because in social standards those are the characteristic of an independent individual . In conclusion , the government and its constituents should come up with a cohesive study on this matter to determine all the aspects and factors affecting alcohol consumption . By doing this , a plan can be drafted that is objective and strategic wherein everyone could benefit and nothing would be lost
