History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a legal holiday in the United States of America celebrated during November 11 of every year . This holiday is observed by the Americans to commemorate the bravery of all US army veterans . This holiday was first celebrated on November 11 , 1918 to honor the end of the First World War , and was formerly named Armistice Day . On May 13 1938 , the US congress passed a legislation that made the Armistice Day a legal federal holiday in the United States . This holiday was a dedication to the cause of world peace

. The Second World War in early 1940 's and Korean War in early 1950 's generated more war veterans and were also honored on Armistice Day . In 1954 , the US legislature amended the Act of 1938 by changing the name of the federal holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day . On June 11 , 1954 , Pres . Dwight D Eisenhower signed this legislation and officially naming the holiday as Veterans Day to honor all American Veterans of all wars . But in 1968 the US congress passed a Bill that moved the observance Veterans Day from Nov . 11 to the fourth Monday of October . This law was first observed on October 25 , 1971 . At first , all states except Mississippi and South Dakota followed this legislation . The year after , two states Louisiana and Wisconsin , changed the observance of this holiday back to Nov . 11 . Other states followed this step move back the observance to Nov . 11 in 1974 and 1975 . In 1975 , another law was amended to return the observance of Veterans Day back to Nov . 11 . This was due to a popular support across the United States . Pres . Gerald R . Ford signed this law on September 20 , 1975 . This law took effect in 1978 . And since then , the Veterans Day is commemorated during the 11th of November of each year Reference
