The development of United Sates from pre colonial times till 1865 shows a steady progress towards achieving the goal of building up a nation that takes pre eminence in the comity of nations . This is a development from the dark pages of history to the advent pilgrims and growth from a purely agrarian economy to an industrialized society . The pilgrims of the May Flower when they reached the new lands had decided to recreate a new political society that had practically nothing to do with the established pattern in Europe . The only link with the mother country was Protestantism and that puritan vision exemplified by John Winthrop became the hallmark of nascent and new political society The May Flower Compact clearly showed that though humble and without perceptible intellectual accomplishments , the pilgrims were quite adept at running their own affairs without interference by anybody else . The accent on individualism coupled with Puritanism became the hallmark of the new developing nation

The social and the political structure of the new country slowly evolved from planters ' partly feudal manner to an absolutely democratic structure . Initially the planters had white indentured servants who were slowly replaced by Africans because it was economical to employ them . The economy also developed from agrarian to industrial .
