South Africa is a developing nation with a middle income economy . It constitutes a dynamic market with great potential for growth , and is rich in natural resources . South Africa has a stable and well developed financial structure . Despite its flourishing economy , the rate of unemployment had been on the increase , and its economic development was unsuccessful in curbing unemployment . The setbacks of the apartheid era continue to perpetuate economic and social inequalities . The gap between the blacks and the whites persists and the black people have not been empowered economically . The government operates on the basis of a conservative economic policy , which is pragmatic in its approach . The South African economic policy aims at preventing inflation , and attempts to undertake liberal measures with respect to trade and business . The British forces occupied the Cape of Good Hope in 1795 , which forced the Dutch settlers to move north in to establish their own republics in 1836 . The Dutch settlers established the independent Boer republics , like the Orange Free State and the South African Republic which was later on known as the Transvaal region . The British had conquered these colonies and annexed them with South Africa , by the year 1902 . Subsequently , South Africa became independent and withdrew itself from the Commonwealth in the year1961 .
