Corn originated in the North Americas as it was the staple food

for many tribes in the area including the Mayans and the Aztecs . Because corn was served as food in various ways , its planting and production spread in the region until it was introduced in the Americas and then later on discovered by Columbus (Schrum , 2004 ) The North American Indians were the ones responsible for allowing corn to be propagated extensively in many countries due to the crop s transport to the Americas . When Columbus discovered corn in the country , he immediately ed its transport to Spain . Since then , corn was gradually transported to different countries within the Asian and African continents (Vogel , 2008 Corn was extensively grown in the past on the vast plains of the Midwest . Apparently , the weather and the topographical conditions in the Midwest were amenable to the propagation of corn , particularly in the states of Illinois , Indiana , Iowa , Ohio , and nearby regions .
