History of the U.S. Civil War

The 18th President of the United States was Ulysses S . Grant . He was born as Hiram Ulysses Grant . The said President attained international fame in the American Civil War in which he commanded Union forces as a general and as general-in-chief . He has been described as the greatest general of his age and one of the greatest military strategists of any age ' by the military historian . Grant 's service to the military was very impressive , full of tactics and strategies because he was the first general who attempted to made a coordinated strategy

in the war and the first one to understand the real concepts of the destruction of an enemy 's economic infrastructure which supplied its armies was as significant as tactical victories on the battlefield . One example of this was in March 1864 , when grant put General William Tecumseh Sherman in immediate command of all forces in the West and moved his headquarters to Virginia where he turned his attention to the long-frustrated Union effort to destroy the army of Lee and his secondary aim was to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond Virginia but Grant knew that the latter would happen automatically once the former was achieved . Another example was during the time of Cold Harbor . It was one of Grant 's most controversial battles in which Grant launched on June 3 a numerous number of three corps without common reconnaissance on a well-fortified defensive line , resulting in horrific casualties . The composed general was observed crying as the magnitude of the slaughter became known but in spite of what happened , Grant had still a fighting spirit and moved on and kept up the pressure . After of the preceding failures in the said battle , Grant approved an innovative plan by Ambrose Burnside 's corps to break the stalemate . In July 30 of 1864 , they exploded a mine under the Confederate works . After having extensive fights with Lee , it finally took place that Lee concede and surrendered (See Ulysses S . Grant .
