The shell companies first it established itself in Nigeria sometimes back in 1937 under the Shell D 'Arcy as it business name . This is the company that pioneered oil prospecting in this region . A year later it was legally recognized and was issued with a license to start looking for oil from this time shell has been one of the leading companies on Nigeria and has helped the country to develop economically and terms of infrastructure . To date

there are four main shell companies that are fully operational . This is a multinational company with origins from Britain and is among the biggest companies in the World . Its main work is to look for oil prospects to extract and to refine , to transport and then to sell as hydrocarbons . What are the historical aspects behind the shell companies in Nigeria ? And how has it helped the Nigerians economically ? This research will intensively discuss about these issues

The Nigerian Shell Company is known as the shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC . This company is a branch of the Royal Dutch Shell that accounts for 40 of Nigerian oil and is operated by this company . This company today accounts for thirty percent of the Shell Company , fifty percent of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and five percent by Agip . These operate on the day land or in the (marginal ) zones . The shell petroleum development company is among the largest oil Company in Nigeria . It has more than six thousand kilometers of laid down pipelines that connect various parts of the nation . It has over thousand wells , eighty-seven flow lines and eight plants . This company 's long-term goal is to be one of the leading gas and oil company in the whole African continent

There are various issues that have been associated with this company There have been arguments that oil exploitation has not contributed in anyway towards economic development in Nigeria and the same has also been said to have happened on social and cultural rights of the Nigerians . The locals have been frustrated by lack of development by this company and because of this , the affected people have turned to gangship and these are mostly the youths . This has resulted to intra and inter-community disputes which the government officials who come from the big communities perpetrate . The government from its developmental plans has sidelined the minority groups in Nigeria thus making them to suffer even more . Instead of the government trying to improve the living standards of its citizens it liaises with the Shell Company to oppress further the suffering Nigerians (Afigbo A .E . and Falola T . 2004

The company has been accused of not formulating policies that would ensure the local people benefit . Oil in Nigeria is deemed to be a great wealth in Nigeria but though it is a rare resource that many countries wish they could possess , there is a very big dichotomy or gap between lack of development...
