The Thin Red Line (1998 ) is one of the most successful and impressive historic movies produced in Hollywood in the end of the twentieth century , which features the events of the World War II : in particular an operation of American military forces during the Battle of Guadalcanal . Based on adaptation of the novel of James Jones , the movie was directed by an American filmmaker Terrence

Malick , who spent years for studying and researching the historic backgrounds of this military campaign in the Pacific Ocean . The cast of the movie included such brilliant actors as Sean Penn , George Clooney , John Travolta , Ben Chaplin , Nick Nolte , Woody Harrelson , John Cusack and others

The movie pictures the activities of young soldiers , the members of a military unit called C Company and focuses on their participation in one of the key operations of the World War II , the Battle of Guadalcanal The team was deployed on the island to help the marines and seize the lands from the Japanese troops . After intruding into the island , the soldiers found themselves right on the fire-line . Their mission was to capture Hill 210 , which was giving the enemy advantageous position Further , the story tells us about the details of the operation : courage of Colonel Tall , refusal of Captain Staros to send his soldiers to face certain death under bullets , confusion of Private Witt , struggle of Private Bell , etc

A great part of the plot is centered on the fragments from the personal lives , different thoughts and moral principles of the young soldiers Some of them were destined to survive the agonies of war and return back home with honors and medals , the others were destined to die under the bullets on the foreign sand , and some agreed for treason and dishonesty in to escape the bloody battlefields . In the end of the movie C Company became heavily outnumbered and was almost surrounded by the Japanese soldiers . That 's why its current commanding officer gave the to his soldiers to retreat . The operation ended with boarding the ship and heading back to American lands

To my mind , the main argument of the movie and the main idea of the director were to demonstrate that war is not just human fears covered with personal courage and bravery , but it is also an extreme situation which reveals the truth about every single person . There are several main characters in the movie , and the scenes where the director employs their narration and personal thoughts are very descriptive , because they emphasize psychological confusion of every soldier , resulting in chaos and struggle . Also , especially powerful are the scenes where the director tried to underline the contrast between beautiful gorgeous nature of the island , green grasses and warm sunrays on the one hand and confused horrified faces of the soldiers , the noises of machine guns , blood and...
