Community not-for-profit Hospitals

and Academic Medical Centers

University of California There are a number of differences between not-for-profit community healthcare centers and large academic medical centers . To start with , I would like to clarify that there are no such things as nonprofit hospitals , but not-for-profit ' hospitals meaning these hospitals are tax exempted . When I say tax-exempted , it doesn 't mean that these community hospitals don 't pay any taxes at all . In fact , they pay taxes namely FICA and

indigent care tax , but not sales tax since they are not-for-profit . To carry on , the assets of not-for-profit community hospitals belong to the community where as these assets belong to the investors /owners in the case of academic medical centers . As the name implies , the not-for-profit hospitals , there are no private profits to a specific person or corporation compared to the ones in the medical centers wherein stockholders , owners , and investors obtain their own private share . Aside from maintaining a healthy community , these hospitals have some things in common too . For one , these not-for-profit hospitals and academic medical centers allocate money to educate and train people to serve each hospital . They have tie-ups with other organizations and universities to ensure the quality of education and the loyalty of future staff Both hospitals also conduct outreach programs and free services such as screening tests , eye exams , and vaccination to the uninsured public Despite the enumerated similarities and differences , an article from Changes in Health Care Financing Organization states that some media accounts reveal that there are barely any differences between these hospitals in matters of billing and service . Not-for-profit hospitals are expected to provide more services with minimum cost to uninsured people and underprivileged . As a result of this disclosure , lawmakers are seriously considering detailing the benefits and services that these not-for-profit hospitals should provide
