Hamlet

In William Shakespeare 's play Hamlet , the title character maintains different kinds of relationships with the other characters in the play His relationships include that of his mother Queen Gertrude , his uncle King Claudius and his friend Horatio . These relations differ from each other , simply because his feelings toward each character vary

In the play , Hamlet is not so fond of his mother Queen Gertrude . This is because he felt disrespected when immediately after his father 's death , his mother quickly remarried . His mother 's choice of a new husband did not

make things any easier . His mother married his uncle which now sits on the throne as king . In Act 1 , Scene 2 of the play Hamlet says

Frailty , thy name is woman

A little month , or ere those shoes were old

With which she followed my poor father 's body

Like Niobe , all tears - why she (O God , a beast that wants discourse of reason

Would have mourned longer (Shakespeare 29-31

With such dexterity to incestuous sheets

It is not , nor it cannot come to good (Shakespeare 31

Queen Gertrude , on the other hand , loves Hamlet so much . She is napve about how her son feels about her actions , which is why she feels alarmed when Hamlet exposes his anger in Act 3 , Scene 4

What have I done , that thou dar 'st wag thy tongue

In noise so rude against me (Shakespeare 173

She could not believe that her beloved son could use such offending words towards her . It pains her greatly to be verbally attacked by the son she holds so dear . Gertrude utters these words in Act 3 , Scene 4

O , speak to me no more

These words like daggers enter in my ears

No more , sweet Hamlet (Shakespeare 177

Aside from his mother , Hamlet also shares a dysfunctional relationship with his uncle , King Claudius . From the beginning , their uncle-nephew relation has not been good . Hamlet considers Claudius ' ascension to the throne as premature . He also does not appreciate that his uncle is now his mother 's husband , which makes the relationship awkward . In Act 1 Scene 2 , Hamlet describes their relationship as , A little more than kin and less than kind (Shakespeare 25 ' This expression denotes the unnatural relationship between Hamlet and Claudius , who assumed his father...
