ON MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES

In thinking about motivation from a management perspective , it 's very important to appreciate the point that a person cannot motivate other people but can only influence what others are motivated to do Motivation therefore is as a status of feeling or thinking in where an individual is keyed up or stimulated to carry out a duty or take on in a particular behavior (Hitt , Miller Colella , 2006 . Motivation is strongly dependent upon having the right tools , the leader 's input and giving the employees both direction and training

when necessary or the room ' to work . But it is also based on motivating and satisfying employees properly . Overall , the key to understanding motivation lies in the interactive processes and relationships between needs , drives and goals . In to effectively motivate employees , rewards should be linked with performance , in accordance to the expectancy theory , that which states that motivation depends on how much a person desires a particular outcome and how attainable the person perceives that objective to be (Parhizgar , 2002 . Likewise , support of employee acknowledgment , security and sense of belongingness is imperative to achieve better performance , as asserted by Elton Mayo in his Hawthorne effect , in where he says that employee acknowledgment , security and sense of belongingness is more essential in shaping their morale and output rather than the material circumstances under which they work (Mayo , 2003 . Further , in to effectively motivate employees it is important to understand each individual 's primary need and match the work and management style appropriately , this according to David McClelland 's theory of needs , as he proposed that individuals differ in which need is most important to them (Argenti , 2000 . Furthermore , since Douglas McGregor has successfully argued that the theory Y assumptions are more valid than theory X , participation , responsibility and good group relations would maximize employee motivation . Lastly , the famous hierarchy of needs by Maslow must be applied to motivation in that each employee 's level of need must first be satisfied before being able to go to the next level of need , in which way motivation can be set to satisfy the identified needs (Maslow , 2000
