Perhaps because after the US-Mexican War the American Civil War followed , it overshadowed the previous wars . The US-Mexican

War began on April 25 , 1846 , and ended on February 2 , 1848 after two years of battle . This war had raised many eyebrows on who was accountable and who was the injured party on this war . Although politicians like John Quincy Adams and then Congressman , Abraham Lincoln were against this war , a lot of Americans ardently gave their support that a military draft was no longer administered . The Wilmot Proviso was part of an appropriations bill to finalize the agreement of resolving the US-Mexican war in August 8 , 1846 . It was submitted by Congressman David Wilmot , a Democrat , and the bill states prevention of introduction of slavery in any territory obtained from Mexico . This , of course was not granted in its first reading , but was neither granted in any of its succeeding readings when it was re-introduced again in the coming years This proviso was considered to be one of the first events that would lead to the Civil War that would eventually follow in the 1850s . The Democratic Party was showing dissatisfaction with the leadership of President James Polk , also a Democrat , because they felt that the Southern delegates dominated the ruling and denied Martin Van Buren , a party contender , a fair chance on the party 's representation . Also , Polk was viewed to be having loyalty and serving the southerners ' interest Martin Van Buren was then elected as the first president of The Free Soil Party in 1848 . The Free Soil Party was a short-lived political party in the United States amid 1848 to 1852 . Its main goal was to push anti-slavery sentiments over the Western territories . They argued that only free men should live in a free soil with a system that was highly morally and economically superior to slavery (Wikipedia . The Free Soil Party , although fairly active in the elections had won no Presidents and Vice-Presidents , but it had two Senators and fourteen Representatives in the thirty-first Congress . Later on , in 1854 , most of its members were absorbed by the Republican Party . The Free Soil Party was also a part of the Compromise of 1850 . This was a succession of laws that aims to resolve the conflict from the US-Mexican War . The issues discussed were mostly about territorial boundaries and slavery . There were five laws that was passed , one of them was the territorial boundary of Texas where it gave up much of its western boundary for financial compensation to pay off its national debt .
