First written as six novellas , each being published in 1996 , The Green Mile 's setting takes its readers to place in 1935 in the penitentiary of Cold Mountain in the south of the United States . The story dramatize the every day job of the guards in E block (the death row of Cold Mountain ) and the arrival of John Coffey , an impressively tall illiterate Black male , charged with the rape and murder of two little girls , and who soon shows supernatural healing powers . The events are told from the point of view of the chief guard , Paul Edgecomb , a cynical but fair man , who shows more humanity and understanding than the average prison guard

In E Block , which is the death row of the prison , the floor of the long corridor leading to the room with the chair is covered with green linoleum , hence the title The Green Mile . King indicates that the doorway leading to the room was so low that John Coffey , had to sit and scoot ' to enter . The room could be so cold that during one execution several witnesses fainted . Even the careful reader would have trouble deciding which of these details are the most important . Names and dates of releases , executions , and deaths appear . At one point the narrator states that there was only one time when he questioned his job which became the reason for writing the novel . But the overall structure of this chapter suggests the way that King will release information throughout the novel . Some details enhance the main points of a book or a chapter , but they also aid in creating suspense as the reader gradually picks up the most important information and remembers reading about it earlier
