p In Charles Dickens book Great Expectations , the life of Pip and his adventures through Victorian England are chronicled in entertaining and thought provoking detail . As a child , Pip lives a humble existence and by all accounts is very poor . At the beginning of the story , Pip is happy and content with his life and the friends that he has until he is to become acquainted with Miss Havisham and her socially conscious daughter Estella who according to Pip , was brought up to wreak revenge on all the male sex " Dickens , Charles . And the words of Miss Havisham do not make the situation any easier for a young man who desperately wants to be with Estella . She comments : Love her , love her , love her ! Pip spends years in this pursuit but still needs an income in the process . He becomes a blacksmith apprentice with Joe This seems to be his everlasting fate in life . The lessons that are to be learned by Pip will not come to fruition until his third stage as he tries to reconcile his upbringing and what he once was with what he has become and how his money and social status has prompted him to look down upon Joe , his once close friend . But it is through his dealings with Jaggers , Wemmick and Herbert Pocket that shapes Pip and his ideology towards the Victorian ideals that he has found himself a part of , for better or worse . Great Expectations , the title as well as the book refer to Pip 's almost obsessive drive to become counted among a higher social class and in the effort , be considered a gentleman : a title that carried a great deal of weight in Victorian England

The character of Jaggers serves as an important figure in the growth of Pip . Jaggers , who is a powerful lawyer , is hired to supervise the elevation of Pip from his meager beginnings to the upper class . Jaggers is a powerful and successful criminal lawyer who naturally , is privy to some dirty and morally questionable business practices . In this business , Jaggers consorts with viscous criminals and is even able to dictate their actions out of their fear for Jaggers . Despite this blood thirstiness , Jaggers does seem to genuinely car for Pip and his well being and though this conviction does not prevent him from his future dealings with the criminal element of London , he does recognize the impediment that these people could have on his moral judgment of himself .
