Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

A Report on Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations

Great Expectations is a novel written by Charles Dickens first in serial form from 1860 to 1861 . The novel 's title is very apt as the story revolves around a boy named Pip and his several expectations in life

The story begins with Pip inside a cemetery where he meets an escaped convict , whose name is revealed as Abel Magwitch later in the story and whom he helped by fetching him food . Magwitch was later captured by the police while Pip continued his life with

his sister and her husband Joe , who is also his guide and mentor . He is eventually hired by a very wealthy woman , Miss Havisham as companion to her daughter , Estella , whom Pip falls in love with . At this point , Pip was expecting for Miss Havisham to groom him to become a wealthy gentleman so that he could be able to pursue Estella but ends up disappointed . After some time , a lawyer arrives and tells Pip that a secret benefactor has left him a huge fortune and that he must immediately go to London to begin his education as a gentleman . Pip thought that the secret benefactor was Miss Havisham and assumed that she wanted for him to marry her daughter However , after his education as a gentleman , Pip was a little disappointed after finding out that it was Magwitch who gave him the fortune and not Miss Havisham . Nevertheless , Pip , being indebted to Magwitch , attempted to help him escape from London but failed to do so as the authorities captured him and sent him to jail , where he died Meanwhile , Pip loses his fortune and many years later he again meets Estella and two live become close friends , thinking that they will never part again

The novel clearly imparts a lesson that one should never assume or expect too much as it could lead him or her to lose sight of his or her goal . In addition , the story also depicted the value of gratitude as shown in Pip 's desire to help Magwitch even though he was initially reluctant to do so
